PROJECT: GEORGIAN HOUSE // INTEGRATOR: FUNCTION CONTROL

Brief

Function Control were brought in to oversee the design, specification and programming of a large family home which required combined lighting, heating and blind control elements under one platform. Following their own research the client requested a KNX solution due to the size and age of the property, requesting full wired system with the entire system controlled under one app.

Due to the age of the property it was subject to large swings in temperature throughout, so providing a stable internal environment was essential.

Additionally, the project scope also included plans to add additional outbuildings to the KNX system so being able to future proof the system and expand it were high on the list of priorities.

Solution

Function Control created a personalised KNX system for this large family home. Lighting control utilises a mixture of Gira Pushbutton Sensor 4 keypads and discreet Jung PIRs. Wider system visualisation and secure remote control was also provided by the Gira X1 & S1, including remote system support by the Function Control team. External PIRs also provide security lighting and external light levels and temperature readings.

For heating requirements, given the size of the property the heating system had to be fairly decentralised. Function Control provided a mixture of underfloor heating manifolds and radiators controlled via 2-port valves totalling 34 zones to provide individual heating control of every room. To allow monitoring of the valves binary inputs were used to track the state of the valve. This allows us and the clients to see via app/notifications whether there are any issues with valves stuck and not responding to commands. Furthermore, two hot water tanks at either end of the property were also brought under the control of the KNX system. As monitoring the heating system was a key requirement, Function Control provided integrated monitoring of various parts of the plant and added them to the system visualisation.

To cater for the future additions of outbuilding, Function Control also pre-wired to all required areas / zoned can system expansion could be easily added at a later date.

Result

The Function Control team deployed an holistic KNX system infrastructure to cater for all current and future requirements via a combination of multifunctional keypads and one centralised app. Due to the age and size of the property various control elements needed to carefully navigated with KNX hitting the mark throughout. In addition, due to the location of the property remote system support was essential and achieved by the popular Gira S1 device.
