As building automation continues to evolve, integrating intelligent lighting control with centralised management systems has become a priority for modern architects, system integrators and facility managers. One of the most efficient ways to achieve this synergy is by combining KNX with DALI.
DALI has been used in commercial projects for many years but when it comes to residential projects there are some considerations to be made and usually DALI Broadcast is a compelling solution for the best dimming performance in today’s world.
What Is DALI and DALI Broadcast?
Before we jump into the benefits, it’s worth quickly clarifying the terminology…
DALI is a globally known standardised lighting control protocol which offers two main types, DALI Fully Addressable and DALI broadcast.
-
DALI Fully Addressable - With a DALI Fully Addressable system each luminaire (fitting) is individually addressable providing an unparalleled level of system flexibility of individual or grouped lighting. This requires on site commissioning of the fittings via the KNX - DALI gateway.
- DALI Broadcast - This is a simpler version of DALI. Instead of addressing each luminaire (fitting) individually, DALI bus is wired to each lighting circuit and from the DALI broadcast actuator and the same command is sent to all devices on that line. No addressing or group configuration is needed on the DALI. With DALI Broadcast control is restricted to the lighting groups initially wired, but is provides all the benefits of DALI lighting performance with reduced commissioning.
How do I choose between DALI Fully Addressable and DALI Broadcast?
In the majority of cases, DALI Fully Addressable is utilised for large scale projects due to the flexibility that comes with being able to individually address each luminaire (fitting). This has particular benefits for multi-use or rented spaces where lighting requirements or zone layouts can vary.
DALI Broadcast is commonly seen in systems which have a stable lighting requirement and look to utilise the performance of DALI lighting without the more timely commissioning required with DALI Fully Addressable.
Why Use DALI Within a KNX System?
KNX excels at integrating various building functions (lighting, blinds, HVAC etc) into one holistic platform. When paired with DALI for lighting, a KNX system can maximise the lighting performance of a project to enhance user experience, energy efficiency and system scalability.
Top Benefits of Using DALI Broadcast in a KNX System
1. Simplified Commissioning
With DALI Broadcast, there's no need to assign addresses to individual lights. This dramatically reduces installation time and commissioning effort.
2. Cost-Effective Integration
By removing the need for addressing and complex configuration, DALI Broadcast solutions typically involve lower hardware and labour costs and a faster installation.
3. Seamless Control via KNX
Enhanced lighting performance can be deployed within a KNX system with lighting control unified across user-friendly KNX touchscreen, keypads or app servers
4. Reliability and Standardisation
Both KNX and DALI are international standards backed by robust ecosystems. When combined the building owner has the confidence that the technology will stand the test of time.
5. Lower skill barrier
With full DALI, integrators often need to be trained on DALI software and tools. DALI Broadcast can be managed entirely through the KNX system with minimal DALI-specific knowledge.
Final Thoughts
Combining KNX with DALI Broadcast strikes a smart balance between control, simplicity and efficiency. If you're an integrator looking for streamlined lighting control and the best possible lighting performance, then DALI Broadcast within a KNX system is definitely worth considering.
